Biotin for hair

The vitamin on the gummy label. Useful if you are truly short of it, which almost nobody on a normal diet is.

Written in the UK, for women and men.

Biotin does not have an NHS role as a hair-growth treatment for people who are not deficient. The NHS says gut bacteria make biotin and a varied diet covers what you need. The US National Institutes of Health says deficiency is rare, and that hair claims rest at best on a few case reports. High doses can interfere with blood tests.

See a GP if hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with illness, a rash, or other symptoms. The NHS asks for that conversation before a private clinic.

Biotin is vitamin B7. It helps the body make fatty acids. The NHS says you need it in very small amounts, that bacteria in the gut make it, and that it is unclear whether you need any extra from food. It is in many foods, at low levels. The advice is the usual one: a varied diet, and do not take too much if you use a supplement. Taking 0.9 mg or less a day in supplements is unlikely to cause harm. There is not enough evidence to say what high daily doses do.

Does a supplement grow hair?

The NIH fact sheet says biotin deficiency is rare, and that severe deficiency has never been reported in healthy people eating a normal mixed diet. When deficiency does happen, thinning hair can be part of it, along with a rash and other problems. That is why bottles claim a hair benefit.

The same sheet says those claims are supported, at best, by a few case reports and small studies. The hair reports it describes are in children with unusual hair-shaft conditions, not in adults with pattern baldness. It says further studies are needed before anyone can say biotin improves hair in healthy people.

Pattern hair loss is genetic. The NHS hair-loss page does not list biotin. Iron deficiency, which can cause shedding, is a different shortage and a different tablet.

The blood-test problem

High-dose biotin interferes with some lab assays. The NIH notes that a single 10 mg dose has interfered with thyroid tests taken within 24 hours, and that a patient died after a troponin test read falsely low. If you take a hair gummy, say so before a blood test. A wrong thyroid number helps nobody, including your hair.

Branded blends that hide a large biotin dose are covered, without a score, in best supplements.

Common questions

Does biotin make hair grow?

Not as a treatment for ordinary pattern hair loss. Deficiency can include thinning hair, and deficiency is rare. The NHS does not recommend biotin supplements for baldness.

How much biotin is safe?

The NHS says taking 0.9 mg or less a day of biotin in supplements is unlikely to cause harm. That is not a target for hair growth.

Why do blood tests mention biotin?

The NIH says even a single 10 mg dose has interfered with thyroid tests within 24 hours. Clinicians are advised to ask what you take when a result does not match how you look.
