Foods for hair growth
Eggs, oily fish, leafy greens and enough protein. Not a superfood, and not a cure for a receding hairline.
Written in the UK, for women and men.
Hair needs the same food as the rest of you. The NHS says protein foods help the body grow and repair, and it lists meat, fish, eggs, pulses and leafy greens among iron sources if you are low in iron. A balanced diet will not reverse genetic pattern hair loss. It can matter a great deal if the shed is from deficiency or weight loss.
See a GP if hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with illness, a rash, or other symptoms. The NHS asks for that conversation before a private clinic.
Food grows hair in the boring sense that hair is protein and the scalp is living tissue. It does not override a genetic pattern. The NHS eatwell advice is still the right plate.
What should be on it?
Build meals around higher-fibre starchy foods, at least five portions of vegetables and fruit, some dairy or a fortified alternative, and some protein. Protein foods include beans, pulses, fish, eggs and meat. The body uses them to grow and repair. Meat also supplies iron, zinc and B vitamins, including B12. Aim for two portions of fish a week, one oily. Limit red and processed meat.
If iron deficiency is the reason hair is falling, the iron page is more specific: dark-green leafy vegetables, fortified cereals and bread, meat, dried fruit, and pulses. Tea, coffee and a lot of dairy at the same sitting make iron harder to absorb. That advice follows a blood test. It is not a reason for a healthy person to take iron tablets “for hair”.
| You want | NHS examples |
|---|---|
| Protein | Beans, pulses, eggs, fish, meat |
| Iron, if you are low | Leafy greens, fortified cereals, meat, dried fruit, pulses |
| Vitamin D in winter | 10 microgram supplement, plus oily fish, egg yolks, fortified foods |
| Zinc from food | Meat, shellfish, dairy, bread, cereals |
Vitamin D in autumn and winter is 10 micrograms for bones. Biotin is already in a varied diet. Chasing either as a hair cure is how supplement aisles stay busy.
What food cannot do
The NHS says pattern baldness usually runs in families and can be permanent. Weight loss, illness and iron deficiency are on the temporary list. If you have been crash dieting, eat properly and tell a GP. If the hairline has been walking backwards for years, read male pattern baldness or hair loss in women. Lunch will not move it back.
Common questions
What foods help hair grow?
Protein foods such as meat, fish, eggs, beans and pulses, plus iron-rich foods if you are low in iron. The NHS balanced diet is the list. No single food is a hair medicine.
How much protein do I need?
The NHS describes protein foods as essential for growth and repair and says to include some each day, with at least two portions of fish a week, one of them oily. It does not set a hair-specific gram target on the page we used.
Will diet fix male pattern baldness?
No. Pattern loss is genetic. Diet is the right lever for a deficiency or for hair loss after weight loss, which the NHS lists as a temporary cause.
