Oral minoxidil
A tablet clinics are using more often. Still a blood-pressure drug, still off-label for hair, still not a recipe.
Written in the UK, for women and men.
Oral minoxidil is a blood-pressure medicine. A 2021 review found 17 studies, with 634 patients, using it as a main hair-loss treatment, mostly for pattern loss. The authors called it effective and well tolerated in healthy people who struggle with the lotion, and said larger trials are still needed. In the UK it is off-label for hair. This page does not give a dose.
See a GP if hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with illness, a rash, or other symptoms. The NHS asks for that conversation before a private clinic.
Topical minoxidil is the pharmacy foam. Oral minoxidil is a tablet invented for blood pressure. Some dermatologists prescribe low doses for hair when the lotion is impractical. That use is off-label. This page explains the review. It does not tell you how many milligrams to take.
What does the review say?
Randolph and Tosti searched up to April 2020 and found 17 studies, with 634 patients, in which oral minoxidil was the main treatment. Pattern hair loss was the condition studied most. Telogen effluvium and other losses appeared too. The authors describe it as effective and well tolerated for healthy patients who have trouble with topical treatment, and they say larger randomised trials are still needed.
“Well tolerated” in a review is not a personal promise. The drug can lower blood pressure and can grow hair in places you did not treat. Those are reasons it stays on a prescription. A 2024 paper’s suggested starting doses are not repeated here. Copying a dose from a paper is how people frighten themselves.
What is the UK context?
The NHS names minoxidil, meaning the treatment people put on the scalp, for pattern loss. It does not tell the public to take the blood-pressure tablet. NICE CKS discusses topical minoxidil that you buy. The British Association of Dermatologists leaflet has mentioned low-dose oral minoxidil as something recent research is looking at. That is not the same as an instruction to start it.
If a specialist offers it, ask what they are watching: blood pressure, pulse, swelling, and unwanted hair. If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or have heart disease, this is a doctor’s conversation before it is a clinic’s.
The foam, with its own rules, is does minoxidil work.
Common questions
Is oral minoxidil legal in the UK?
The tablet exists as a blood-pressure medicine. Using it for hair loss is off-label, which a specialist can discuss. It is not a product to buy from an unregulated website on the back of a dose you saw online.
Does low-dose oral minoxidil work?
The Randolph and Tosti review describes it as effective in the studies they found, and says larger randomised trials are needed. Most of the patients had pattern hair loss.
Is it the same as the foam?
No. The foam is topical minoxidil, which the NHS names for pattern hair loss. The tablet affects the whole body, including blood pressure and hair you did not mean to grow.
