Hair transplant: Turkey and the UK

The NHS will not pay for a cosmetic transplant. Anyone quoting you one price for Turkey has not shown you a like-for-like operation.

Written in the UK, for women and men.

A hair transplant is cosmetic surgery, so it is not available on the NHS. It can suit permanent baldness that runs in families, and it is not usually suitable for alopecia areata. Turkish packages advertised online often bundle travel and a hotel, which is not the same thing as a UK consultant episode. A single pound figure would mix unlike quotes.

See a GP if hair loss is sudden, patchy, or comes with illness, a rash, or other symptoms. The NHS asks for that conversation before a private clinic.

People searching “Turkey cost” want a number. Publishing one we have not checked would be a guess, and a guess is how bad surgery gets sold. The NHS page is the solid starting point, and it is about suitability, not a price list.

What does the NHS say?

A hair transplant is not available on the NHS because it is cosmetic surgery. NICE CKS says the same for male pattern hair loss: the patient bears the cost. The operation moves your own hair. The NHS says it can be suitable for permanent baldness that runs in families. It is not usually suitable for alopecia areata, where the problem is not a stable bald area waiting for grafts.

See a GP before you book a clinic. That is the NHS instruction for hair loss generally, and it matters more when the next step is surgery abroad.

Why Turkey and the UK are hard to compare

A UK quote is often a surgeon, a plan, and a fee for a stated number of grafts, with aftercare in the same country. A Turkish package advertised to UK patients often adds a hotel and flights, a clinic you cannot revisit easily, and a graft count that is not defined the same way. Until those are written side by side, a cheaper headline is not a cheaper operation.

There isn’t a like-for-like pound figure for either country. A table needs current quotes from the clinics’ own pages, for the same operation.

What to ask before anyone takes a deposit

Who does the surgery, what their registration is, how many grafts, what happens if you need a repair, and who you call in the UK if the scalp is infected next week. Medicines such as finasteride or minoxidil do not become unnecessary because you had surgery. Pattern loss can continue in the hair you did not move. Those drugs are explained on finasteride and minoxidil.

A red light hat is not a transplant and does not change this advice.

Common questions

Can I get a hair transplant on the NHS?

No. The NHS says hair transplants are not available on the NHS because they are cosmetic surgery.

How much does a hair transplant in Turkey cost?

Advertised packages often include flights and a hotel, so they are not comparable with a UK clinic fee until you have the same operation, the same number of grafts and the same aftercare written down.

Who is a transplant for?

The NHS says it can suit permanent baldness that runs in families. It is not usually suitable for alopecia areata. See a GP before a commercial clinic.
